Drunk driving has the potential to put your life and the lives of others at risk. Sometimes, when someone is accused of drunk driving, that might not be the whole story, though. For instance, take this news article about an accident involving an alleged drunk driver.
The allegedly drunk driver was behind the wheel at around 1:00 a.m., when she collided with a group of cows. The cows had wandered onto the road prior to the incident, and a sheriff’s deputy was helping to lead them off the highway when the vehicle struck them.
The deputy was injured, but six of the cows were killed in the crash. While the woman is accused of drinking and driving, investigators have said that she may have fallen asleep prior to the crash. So far, the authorities have not filed any charges despite reporting the case as a possible drunk-driving case to the media.
There is a significant difference in penalties for drunk versus distracted driving, and news articles like this one show why it’s important to defend yourself as soon as possible. This person is not being accused of drunk driving, yet she has been reported as one in the media.
Kentucky is also home to many animals that could break loose, and drivers who collide with them shouldn’t bear the burden of explaining themselves. Livestock should not be on the highways or roadways, and proper warnings need to be placed along the roadway if they are being moved elsewhere. Collisions of that type may not be a driver’s fault, and a DUI should not be an immediate assumption.
